The Weekend

We saw Young Victoria on Christmas evening. Sort of appropriate, since many of our Christmas traditions are attributed to Prince Albert introducing them from Germany into English homes.

Julius

The Boy in the Checkered Shirt and I met at this historic bar for some burgers and fries. To class things up we each had a glass of pinot noir. We met a guy who had recently lost his home to a fire and was living in Jersey City until he found a new place.

After a while, we met up with D&TK, who were visiting from Boston. The bar had become too loud to socialize and they wanted a full meal. So we migrated to Extra Virgin. I had a goat cheese salad and a plate of asparagus.

Yummy House

Like Jews on Christmas, we had Chinese food and saw a movie. We split a huge order of General Tso's Chicken, a serving of Crab Rangoon, and steamed Chicken Won Tons. The movie was Young Victoria.

The Weekend

We had our first snowfall of the winter and I finished my Christmas shopping and wrapping. This song topped off a great weekend as we stayed warm and got in the holiday spirit.

Teddy's

It was the final Sunday before Christmas and I needed to finish (and in many cases start) my holiday shopping.  Before heading into Manhattan, the Boy in the Checkered Shirt and I went to this Williamsburg tavern for a good brunch.  The snow from the night before was thick in the streets still and we were decked for the cold, from the ground up in thermal underwear and topped off in hoodies.

We sat at a small table in the front window.  Halfway through the meal we were exposed to the unpleasantness of another patron seated at the bar.  We were hungry, so it didn't chase our appetites away.

I ordered the eggs and chicken sausage, opting for my eggs scrambled with cheese.  He ordered steak and poached eggs.  Coffee and water for both.

After the meal we wandered around Williamsburg, playing in the cold and snow, hiked over the Bridge, and cherished the warmth of Burger King when we arrived in Manhattan.

Tina's Place

I love diner food.  Perhaps you've notice.  There is a non-glamorized diner near the apartment that I enjoy, even though it's sort of dirty.  But, that isn't necessarily a bad thing in a diner.  Well, it's not a great thing anywhere, but dirt caked in grease can be considered atmosphere.  The proprietor, I assume called Tina, is very friendly.

On this last weekend before Christmas, the Boy in the Checkered Shirt and I stopped here.  We started with coffee, I ordered an omelet with vegetables and cheddar cheese, he had eggs with turkey bacon - he was happy to find a place close to home that serves it. We'll be back.

The Weekend

Fritz got this song in my head at brunch on Saturday. And so it stuck for the rest of the weekend.

Paquito's

After a long day at work and a short night at the gym, the Boy in the Checkered Shirt and I hopped down to this Mexican restaurant in the East Village.  We each had a burrito - his chicken, mine chicken and beef.  I had a ginger ale with mine, he stuck to water.

Esperanto and Terrace 5

For Devin's birthday, a small group of friends met for brunch at this bistro noted for its South American menu and music. I abstained from drinking while everyone else enjoyed a Mojito or Bloody Mary.  I stuck to a simple fruit-yogurt-granola bowl with mint leaves while the others had eggs prepared a variety of ways with potatoes and salads.

After the meal, we walked Devin to a tattoo parlor to contemplate his options.

Later, the Boy in the Checkered Shirt and I went uptown with Luswin to visit the Tim Burton exhibit at MoMA.  There were no tickets available for the show, so we toured the museum's permanent collection instead.  Meer's friend Guy was in town from Connecticut and joined us as Luswin headed back to New Jersey.  We stepped into the museum's cafe for a coffee, café americain, and cappuccino.

Flea Market Cafe

For his birthday the Boy in the Checkered Shirt and I went to Flea Market for a French brunch.  He had an omelet with mushrooms and tomatoes and I ordered the eggs benedict.  We didn't share food because I don't like mushrooms and he can't eat ham.
Are your neighbors giving you sideways glances?
